Growth beyond borders: connecting capital, clients and opportunity across Africa
Regional Executive: Southern Africa, Absa Group Limited and Managing Director, Absa Bank (Mauritius) Limited, Ravin Dajee, highlights that the businesses that succeed in today’s environment are those that combine a clear growth strategy with the right financial partner, since successful expansion lies in the ability to translate ambition into execution.
Mauritius has built a strong reputation as a trusted International Financial Centre, underpinned by a robust regulatory framework, strong governance standards and deep connectivity to both African and global markets. As Africa continues to evolve as a destination for trade, investment and new business ventures, Mauritius is playing an ever more important role as a gateway for businesses seeking to access growth opportunities across the continent.
However, successful expansion is rarely determined by opportunity alone. The true differentiator lies in the ability to translate ambition into execution. As businesses pursue new markets, invest for growth, optimise liquidity, manage cross-border risks and respond to evolving regulatory requirements, they need more than financing. They need informed advice, deep market knowledge and tailored solutions that help transform growth ambitions into reality.
For Absa Mauritius, this creates a clear role: staying close to each client’s story and providing the expertise, platforms and connectivity needed to support their next chapter.
“In today’s environment, banking is no longer simply about providing access to capital. It is about helping clients structure transactions efficiently, unlock liquidity, manage risk and create the financial architecture needed to support sustainable growth,” says Ravin Dajee, Managing Director of Absa Mauritius. “The businesses that succeed are often those that combine a clear growth strategy with the right financial partner, one that understands the nuances of regional markets, can anticipate emerging risks and opportunities, and has the capability to connect clients to the networks, exper-tise and solutions required to execute with confidence.”
Corporate lending activity remained robust in 2025, with bank credit to the sector increasing by 10.1% year-on-year in June, according to the Bank of Mauritius Financial Stability Report. This momentum was mainly supported by corporates engaged in manufacturing, professional, scientific and technical activities, and construction. The report also notes that robust demand for credit indicates increased confidence among businesses in the economic outlook.
For Ravin Dajee, this points to a more forward-looking business environment. Companies are investing in capacity, productivity and regional expansion. They are also operating in a landscape shaped by evolving regulation, currency movements, sustainability considerations, supply chain pressures and the need for faster digital execution.
In this context, corporate banking can no longer be limited to lending. Businesses need capabilities that respond to the full reality of their operations. This includes trade finance, working capital support, foreign exchange, liquidity management, cross-border banking, sustainable finance, custody and advisory expertise. More importantly, these capabilities must come together in a way that helps clients make decisions and implement them with discipline.
At Absa Mauritius, the focus is not only on what the Bank offers, but on what each client is trying to achieve. A company developing a major project may need funding, but it may also require structuring support, risk management, sustainability guidance and access to market insight. A business expanding across borders may require trade documentation, currency solutions, liquidity visibility and support in understanding different regulatory environments.
This is where Absa Mauritius seeks to bring value. Through its pan-African network, the Bank combines local market understanding with regional reach and international connectivity. This enables it to support clients operating in Mauritius, expanding across Africa or using the island as a platform for wider trade and investment corridors.
The relationship between banks and corporate clients is therefore becoming more advisory-led. It is about under-standing where a business comes from, what it is building and where it wants to go. It is also about bringing the appropriate expertise together, with sector knowledge, strong governance, disciplined risk management and people who can accompany clients through important stages of their journey.
Digital capability is central to this evolution. Corporate clients expect speed, control and visibility in the way they manage their financial operations. Platforms such as Absa Access and Trade Management Online support this by giving clients secure access to payments, trade activities and liquidity management. Their value is strongest when combined with human engagement and trusted advice.
This combination of capability, connectivity and client focus has also been recognised externally. Absa Mauritius was named Bank of the Year 2025 in Mauritius by The Banker and Best Trade Finance Bank in Mauritius by The Asian Banker as well as the Best Investment Bank in Mauritius by Global Finance and World Economic Magazine. These recognitions reinforce the Bank’s ability to support businesses that trade, invest and scale across markets, while maintaining the governance and execution standards expected of a trusted financial partner.
As Mauritius strengthens its role as a platform between Africa and the rest of the world, Absa Mauritius remains focused on helping businesses act with clarity and purpose. By combining expertise, digital capability, governance and pan-African connectivity, the Bank supports clients as they turn plans into projects, and projects into long-term value.
Ultimately, banking enables progress. For Absa Mauritius, this means being invested in clients’ stories, understanding their ambitions and bringing together the solutions to support their next chapter across Africa and beyond.
