Absa Mauritius takes a significant step forward in its social commitment with the launch of Stories of hope, a nationwide cancer awareness programme that will run for three years.
"In Mauritius, over 80% of deaths are due to non-communicable diseases and cancer is currently the third leading cause of death on the island. The number of cases continues to rise each year. As a responsible organisation, Absa Mauritius is reaffirming its commitment to being an active force for good in everything that it does – a commitment that aligns with our purpose: Empowering Africa’s tomorrow, together… one story at a time," says Ravin Dajee, Managing Director of Absa Mauritius.

"Stories of hope is fully in line with this commitment. Its goal is to raise awareness among Mauritians about the growing impact of cancer, encourage early screening, and promote a culture of prevention. Through this initiative, we are reaffirming our determination to contribute to building an inclusive and prosperous future, convinced that the well-being of our population is essential to the success of this vision," he adds.
The programme will focus on five major types of cancer prevalent in Mauritius: breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, and cervical cancer. Its approach will unfold in three stages:
- Awareness: Sharing crucial information about cancer, destigmatising the disease by showcasing testimonials and organising open discussions.
- Early detection: Encouraging and facilitating access to regular screenings.
- Prevention: Promoting healthy lifestyles and adopting practices that reduce the risks of diseases.
Recognising the essential expertise of the healthcare sector in addressing this challenge, the bank will partner with C-Care, the Ministry of Health and Wellness and various NGOs to facilitate access to screenings and provide professional support.
To mark the launch of this campaign, the bank hosted a press conference and a relay event that brought its employees together around this shared cause.
By placing health at the heart of its community engagement, Absa Mauritius aims to create a lasting and meaningful impact. Stories of hope is a call to collective action, working toward a more conscious and proactive society in the fight against cancer and in promoting the well-being of the Mauritian community.
