Launched in May 2025 by Absa Mauritius, the Stories of Hope campaign helps open dialogue and break down taboos surrounding cancer. Over the months, this initiative has evolved into a powerful collective movement that promotes hope, solidarity, and prevention. To date, through activities conducted by Absa Mauritius and its healthcare partners, more than 3,500 people in Mauritius and Rodrigues have been reached through awareness initiatives and offered access to free cancer screening services.
This commitment continues. As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, several screening sessions will be organized in communities that have had limited access to prevention initiatives. In November, the focus will shift to men's health, encouraging more men to learn about cancer risks and take advantage of screening opportunities.
"Since the launch of Stories of Hope, we have been deeply moved by the stories of people who were initially hesitant to get screened. Accompanied by a loved one or a friend, many eventually took that important step. Their fears were often linked to a lack of information," says Cédrine Chimon-Rampal, CSR Manager at Absa Mauritius.
Encouraging everyone to take action
Behind the numbers are personal stories, meaningful conversations, and moments of awareness.
At Absa Mauritius, this initiative is built on a strong belief: health is one of the foundations of both individual and collective well-being. A healthier population also contributes to building a more resilient society and supports sustainable economic development.
Beyond sharing information, the awareness sessions provide safe and welcoming spaces for dialogue. Participants can ask questions, discuss their concerns with healthcare professionals, and engage with people who have personally experienced cancer.
In a supportive environment, these conversations help people better understand the disease and overcome psychological barriers that may discourage or delay screening.
Early screening: a vital step
One of the key objectives of Stories of Hope is to change perceptions around early cancer screening. When people better understand the process and its benefits, screening becomes less intimidating and less anxiety-inducing.
"Every person who becomes informed can, in turn, encourage those around them. Some even choose to accompany a loved one or friend to a screening session," adds Cédrine Chimon-Rampal.
This ripple effect is essential. A simple conversation can encourage someone to get screened, while a personal story can reassure a person who may still be hesitant.
Early detection plays a critical role in cancer care. When cancer is identified at an early stage, treatment is often more effective. Early diagnosis can also help reduce the complexity of certain treatments and allow for more appropriate care.
For this reason, it is important to better understand the value of screening and help make it a regular prevention habit.
Bringing prevention closer to communities
The message of Stories of Hope is simple: being informed, talking openly, and getting screened can make all the difference.
As the campaign continues to grow, Absa Mauritius aims to reach even more people. To support this objective, the bank has strengthened its network of community partners and trained around 30 employees to facilitate awareness sessions within communities.
The goal is to bring prevention and screening closer to people by meeting them where they are and creating opportunities to engage in accessible, reassuring, and supportive environments.
This commitment to expanding the programme's reach also includes raising awareness about other types of cancer, particularly those that affect men more frequently, such as colon and prostate cancer.
Through this broader and more inclusive approach, Stories of Hope aims to contribute to a lasting culture of prevention across Mauritius.
Building a culture of prevention
If Stories of Hope is to leave a lasting legacy, Absa Mauritius hopes it will be a society that is better informed, more open to dialogue, and more proactive about prevention.
Because behind every awareness initiative is the opportunity to change behaviour. A personal story can inspire courage. A conversation can break a taboo. A screening carried out at the right time can change the course of a life.
Stories of Hope is a message of love, hope, and courage.
