Absa Mauritius has been honored with two prestigious awards at the Global Economics Awards 2024: Best CSR Initiatives in the Banking Industry and Best Sustainable Finance Bank.

These accolades underscore the bank’s ongoing commitment to integrating Sustainability at the core of its operations, with the ambition of positioning itself as a leader in Sustainability both locally in Mauritius and regionally across Africa.

The “Best CSR Initiatives in the Banking Industry” award recognises Absa Mauritius’ dedication to making a tangible impact on society. Key initiatives such as the renovation of the Female Ward 1-6 at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose Belle in 2024, which has supported 3242 women with non-communicable diseases in 2024, and the Absa Mauritius Employee Volunteering Programme, which encourages colleagues to volunteer in Absa’s community engagement programme which focuses on diversity and inclusion have been instrumental in driving positive change across the island. As part of our commitment to biodiversity, we also launched a reforestation project at Le Morne Brabant, with over 10,400 indigenous trees planted.

Furthering its commitment to financial inclusion, Absa Mauritius launched its Financial Literacy Programme in August 2024, aimed at making financial education more accessible to people with disabilities. Additionally, in December 2024, the Absa Women Forward Programme opened applications to support female entrepreneurs on their journey to success and a more inclusive future.

The Best Sustainable Finance Bank” award honors the bank’s efforts to integrate Sustainable Finance and Sustainability Risk into its products and propositions, to partner with clients to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. The Bank’s Sustainable Finance strategy is supported by many specialist bankers both locally and across the Absa pan African operations. This commitment is also supported by Absa’s efforts on decarbonisation, such as the installation of a solar-powered Green ATM and solar charging stations in its parking areas. In February 2025, the bank also launched its new Sustainable Trade Finance proposition, a financial solution designed to help businesses transition to more sustainable business practices.

"This double recognition serves as a powerful motivator to our leadership and colleagues across Absa, driving us to go even further in our commitment to creating a better tomorrow. It reaffirms our focus to embedding sustainability into every aspect of our organisation and strengthens our pledge to be an active force for good in everything that we do, one sustainable story at a time," says Nathan Carr, Chief of Staff and Head of Legal and Sustainability.

These awards highlight the international recognition of Absa Mauritius’ efforts to balance economic performance with social and environmental responsibility.
